Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Kyle Stafford

WVB: Lady Mustangs Participate in San Antonio Shin Dig Tournament

The University of the Southwest volleyball team went to San Antonio this past weekend to participate in the San Antonio Shin Dig Tournament. The Lady Mustangs played SAGU twice and OLLU once in the tournament. In the first match on Friday, the Lady Mustangs lost to SAGU 3-0 losing the sets 25-18, 25-17, and 25-15. Later that Evening they matched up against OLLU where they played 3 close sets but lost 3-0 by the scores of 25-19, 25-19, and 25-18. Saturday morning, they were back in action against SAGU and lost 3-0 with the sets being 25-10, 25-18, and 25-14. After the weekend SAGU is 3-1, OLLU is 2-1, and USW fell to 1-6. 
 
After a tough weekend against some challenging opponents, Head Coach Cass Smith had this to say about the weekend "It's definitely back to the drawing board for us to make adjustments to better ourselves. We learned a lot and I'm satisfied with that knowledge but not our outcome; we can do more." 
 
Some players that played well this weekend were Alissa Mancera, Alina Gutierrez, and Fesili Masaniai. Mancera played in all 9 sets recording 3 kills, 31 assists, 15 digs, and totaled 4 points.  Coach Smith said about Mancera "Alissa Mancera took on the role as a leader and made a huge impact on and off the court." Gutierrez played in 7 sets, recorded 1 assist, and 4 digs on the weekend and Coach smith said "Alina Gutierrez stepped up big for us, and played with immense maturity." Masaniai played in all 9 sets and recorded 14 kills,2 assists, 9 digs, and was responsible for 15 points. Smith said about Masaniai "Fesili Masaniai played out of her position and made big plays for us and her energy revived us." 
 
The Lady Mustangs will look to rebound against Wayland Baptist this Wednesday, September 1st at home.
