WSOC: Lady Mustangs Tie Division II Lubbock Christian

The University of the Southwest Women's soccer team went on the road and played NCAA DII Lubbock Christian University on Tuesday night. They played a very hard-fought game and came out of the contest with a draw. After starting the season 0-2, they went to Lubbock seeking their first win of the season. They did not get that win but put together their most complete performance of the young season. The match saw LCU get out to an early 2-0 lead, but saw the Mustangs tie the score up before halftime with goals from Jennifer Schroeder and Mayeli Torres. In the second half, USW took a 3-2 lead in the 72nd minute on another goal by Jennifer Schroeder. LCU answered back quickly to tie the score at 3 and the score remained that way for the rest of the contest. Through two overtimes neither side was able to find the net, despite chances by both sides.

Head Coach D'Angelo Garcia had this to say about his team's performance "After tonight's game, we are going home with plenty of positive notes. I was very pleased with the result coming back from a two-goal deficit, it's not a very easy thing to do. Playing 110 minutes is not only physically draining but mentally as well and I am very proud of their effort collectively. Like I told the team after the game, we need to focus on this season long-term like a marathon, not a race. We have some time to fix minor errors on both sides of the ball and once we do that, we will be fine. Playing 4 games in 8 days is starting to wear on the team especially since all games played so far have been away. We need to continue to stay motivated and hungry because I know the type of potential we have collectively throughout the field."

As mentioned Earlier Schroeder netted her 2nd and 3rd goals of the season, giving her the lead on the team to this point. Coach Garcia said, regarding Schroeder "I'm proud of Jennifer for stepping up and being our goal-scoring leader. She is continuing to progress every single day and I'm very excited for the remainder of the season for her." Torres scored her first goal of the season late in that first half and Coach Garcia joked "Mayeli also got in the stat book no matter how the goal was scored, a goal is a goal." Freshman keeper, Kristina Simpson, played the whole contest and recorded 7 big saves for the Lady Mustangs. Arlette Yanez and Priscilla Garcia both recorded their first assists of the season in the contest.

The Lady Mustangs will take on Wayland Baptist on the road, tomorrow at 3:00 PM MST. They will look to build off the momentum gained from this game against LCU.
