Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Andrew Garcia

MSOC: Mustangs Defeated by LSUS

Hobbs, NM – The University of the Southwest Men's Soccer team (3-7-4, 2-4-4 RRAC) hosted first-place Louisiana State University Shreveport (LSUS) (11-3-3, 8-0-2 RRAC). A challenging game ended in a 4-0 loss for the Mustangs against an LSUS side receiving votes in the national rankings.

Shreveport struck early in the first half when Gledi Doda found the back of the net on a free kick in the 4thminute.

The Mustang defense played tough the rest of the first half, keeping a high-caliber Shreveport offense to just one goal in the first half. Unfortunately, USW could not get on the board to tie it up before the end of the half, leaving it at 1-0 to LSUS.

Both teams went into half, searching for adjustments to turn the match in their desired direction.

In the 57th minute, Doda found Maurice Theart for another goal for the Pilots, putting them up 2-0.

It did not take long for Shreveport to find the goal once again when in the 64th minute, Theart put his second of the game away.

LSUS's Adam Morris found another goal in the 75th minute off a deflection in the box, adding to their lead. The game would end at 4-0, with USW dropping their second to last game of the regular season.

"I'm extremely proud of how the boys played," said Coach Edgar Negrete. "LSUS is a good team. Unfortunately, we didn't get the result, but we scored on some chances that were off rebounds. I think that our biggest flaw is playing off the rebound. But we played with heart yesterday, and I was happy with how the boys played. We learned a lot from LSUS. They came and won the regular season on our field and celebrated. It was well deserved. They were a good team, and we can't get upset with them celebrating a championship season. Our boys stood and watched, and we turned that into something positive. The guys were devasted, but I told them to remember this feeling going forward, and we can use that as motivation to prepare for the next game."

"We have one more game left in the season, and I want to win the next game for our seniors who have given everything to this program. I'm proud of these boys and will continue to be happy being their head coach. We live, and we learn and continue to move forward."
