Hobbs, NM – The University of the Southwest Women's Soccer looked to continue their run of form when they hosted Our Lady of the Lake for another RRAC Conference matchup. The Lady Mustangs were riding a five-game win streak leading into the Thursday afternoon affair.
USW came out looking to score early in the first half but could not put anything into the back of the net. The Lady Mustangs continued their aggression throughout the first half, leading the OLLU Saints four shots to two. Both teams went into the half tied at zero, with adjustments to be made for either side to get on the board.
USW made those adjustments as they came out strong with a goal from Sophomore
Maya Sanchez in the 47
thminute, putting them up 1-0. Continuing her hot streak as of late, Sanchez decided not to waste much time as she bagged her second goal of the game not even a minute later. The Lady Mustangs were now up 2-0 and rode that score all the way until the end of the second half.
The Lady Mustang had another clean sheet, their third clean sheet in the last four games. USW is on quite the dominant stretch as they have outscored their opponents 32-4 during their now six-game win streak.
"What a performance," said Coach
Edgar Negrete. "I can sit here and say this is one of the best performances thus far. This is the biggest challenge we have had this season, and we got two huge goals by
Maya Sanchez to give us the 2-0 victory. I do want to highlight some players.
Andrea Martinez came out and played really well. She came out and got us the clean sheet. My defenders did such a great job today! They gave a world-class performance!
Jasmine Martinez dominated and acted like a true leader today. She dictated that back line and won every ball in the air and every tackle; she played like a defensive player of the year. I also had
Michaela Salazar, who has never played center back, and she stepped up to the plate and acted like she's been playing that position her whole life, which shows excellent maturity! My outside backs and
Arlette Yanez also stepped up to the plate and made a huge contribution to us picking up the win. She has been fighting for that spot and has shown why she deserves it. Makenzie did an excellent job for us with her hard work and doing everything possible for us to get the clean sheet and help us with this victory. To be honest, I can go on and on about these players, but I want to say every player came out to play today, and we showed some magic coming out and beating a talented OLLU 2-0. That's not an easy thing to do, and these girls deserve they have been working so hard to continue to win at home and stay undefeated."
"We have to thank our support system as well as our friends, family, faculty, and staff who come out and support these girls every home game. We enjoy it tonight, but we have to be ready tomorrow and get prepared for TAMUSA, who is also another great team."
