MBB: USW Drops Two in Louisiana

The University of the Southwest Men's Basketball team took on two RRAC conference opponents in Louisiana this past weekend. Southwest took on ranked opponent LSU Shreveport on Thursday, falling to the top 25 squad 89-76. The Mustangs then traveled to LSU Alexandria for a battle between two teams in the middle of the RRAC standings. LSUA would come out on top as they took down Southwest by a score of 79-69.
 
 
LSU Shreveport
 
Southwest (8-5, 4-2 RRAC) was looking to get back on the winning side of things after two losses interrupting a 3-game winning streak, starting the week off with a tough matchup against LSUS on Thursday. 
 
LSUS came into the matchup on their own 3-game winning streak and started out this game just as they have been. Having a good size lead going into the half; the Pilots lead the Mustangs 45-37. 
 
There was fight in the Mustangs looking to bounce back in the second half. However, they would fall behind to a second-half score of 39-44 and, in total, losing the game to the Pilots 76-89. 
 
Junior Jahvonta Jones scored 18 points to pace the Mustangs in scoring, also adding nine rebounds of his own. Senior Tre Thomas also added 10 points to their effort while leading the team with five assists.
 
 
LSU Alexandria
 
Southwest (8-6, 4-3 RRAC) had to finish off the trip with a game against an LSUA team who came into the game with a record of 8-6 overall and 2-4 in the RRAC. 
 
The Mustangs started behind the eight ball in the game, falling to a first-half score of 39-42. 
 
LSUA continued to play strong in the second half of the game, and Southwest would end up falling to the Generals 69-79. 
 
Junior Jahvonta Jones had another 18 points outing to lead the team. Grad Jamell Bradley also chipped in with 17 points of his own. Senior Tre Thomas found himself grabbing a 10-point outing and leading the team in both rebounds and assists with six and three, respectively. 
 
 
Men's Basketball hosts a pair of RRAC opponents at home this week as they take on Huston-Tillotson on Thursday, January 12th, and Our Lady of the Lake on Saturday, January 14th. Continue to follow USW Athletics and USW Men's Basketball on all social media for scores and updates throughout the season.
