MBB: Mustangs Fall in Tough Matchups

The University of the Southwest Men's Basketball team was back in Hobbs as they looked to get on the right track once again this season. The Mustangs had their work cut out for them as they faced the 24th-ranked team in the nation, Texas A&M Texarkana, and then Paul Quinn College following. Unfortunately, the Mustangs were defeated in both contests this week.

#24 Texas A&M Texarkana

Southwest (9-11, 5-8 RRAC) coming off a really tough part of the schedule, and off their second trip to Louisiana, they had to face the 24th-ranked Eagles (18-4, 11-3 RRAC) for the second time. The first matchup had to go to double overtime before it was decided with an 87-90 loss for the Mustangs.

Feeding off a great home-court advantage, the Mustangs were on the offensive in the first half and would eventually end the first half on a scoring run that would see them tie the game at 36 all.

The second half was a back-and-forth battle the entire way. The Mustangs, however, would eventually run out of steam and would give way to the Eagles and lose the contest 64-68.

Sophomore Tyler Watkins scored 16 points to continue his good scoring pace. Junior Miles Macadory was a tough matchup for defenders that night as he scored 14 points and led the Mustangs with seven rebounds.

Paul Quinn College

Southwest (9-12, 5-9 RRAC) rounded off the week by going up against the Tigers (10-6, 8-6 RRAC) in a Saturday matchup.

The Mustangs had a tough time hanging with Paul Quinn in the first half after putting in a strong effort in a tough game on Thursday, falling behind quickly 33-45 in Saturday's game.

Finding some offensive rhythm in the second half by putting up 41 points, but it was just a case of too little too late as they lost the game 74-86.

Junior Jahvonta Jones would go for a tie for the team-high in scoring with 20 points. Senior Tre Thomas would match that total with a hot shooting night from beyond the arc, going 4-4 on the way to his 20-point game.

The Mustangs will be back in action until February 4th, when they travel to Hawkins, Texas, to take on the Jarvis Christian Bulldogs. Continue to follow USW Athletics and USW Men's Basketball on all social media for scores and updates throughout the season.
