Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Jonathan Gamboa

Lady Mustangs Fall Short in Match Against Houston-Victoria

In a game filled with determination and moments of brilliance, Southwest's women's soccer team came up short against a dominant Houston-Victoria side, falling 5-1 in an away match at Victoria, TX.

From the opening whistle, it was clear that Houston-Victoria was intent on controlling the game. The match's first goal came at the 18-minute mark, with Kaitlyn McCarty scoring from an assist by Trine Stenderup-Jorg. This set the tone for what would be a challenging day for Southwest's defense.

McCarty struck again just minutes later, assisted by Yuvier Borjas, doubling Houston-Victoria's lead. Before Southwest could settle into the match, Estelle Flanagan netted a third goal for the home side, unassisted, at the 23-minute mark. Despite these early blows, Southwest's goalkeeper Kristina Simpson fought valiantly, saving several attempts on goal in the first half.

Southwest's lone breakthrough came just before halftime when Rozlynn Ramsey found the back of the net in the 43rd minute. Her unassisted goal provided a glimmer of hope for the visiting side as they headed into the break trailing 3-1.

The second half saw Southwest's defensive efforts improve, but they struggled to create significant offensive pressure. Houston-Victoria capitalized on their opportunities, with Kyleigh Spree-Kolos scoring twice in the 58th and 73rd minutes, assisted by Alva Klockare and Chloe Spencer, respectively.

Despite a valiant effort, Southwest could not close the gap. The final whistle confirmed a 5-1 defeat, leaving Southwest with a 3-6-1 overall record and 1-6-0 in conference play.

Goalkeeper Elena Moya, who replaced Simpson in the second half, made some critical saves but could not keep Houston-Victoria at bay. Southwest struggled to match the offensive firepower of Huston-Victoria, managing only seven shots compared to Houston-Victoria's 15.

The loss marks a difficult chapter in what has been a challenging season for Southwest, but the team's resilience was evident throughout the match. The players gave their all, and with the leadership of key figures like Rozlynn Ramsey, they will surely look to bounce back in the coming games.

The Lady Mustangs are back in action this Saturday versus Huston- Tillotson in Austin, Texas at 12:00 PM MT / 1:00 PM CT.
