Lady Mustangs and Huston-Tillotson Settle for a 2-2 Draw

In an intense matchup at the Georgetown Soccer Association Fields, Huston-Tillotson hosted Southwest (N.M.) in a thrilling 2-2 draw on October 12, 2024. Both teams displayed strong resilience, with Huston-Tillotson taking the early lead before Southwest (N.M.) clawed their way back in the final stretch.

After a scoreless first half, the action truly began in the second period. Huston-Tillotson's America Macias broke the deadlock in the 67th minute with a composed penalty kick, marking her first goal of the season. Just two minutes later, Alondra Quiroz doubled Huston-Tillotson's lead, capitalizing on a rebound from a save to slot home a crucial goal with an assist from Cheyanna Burnett-Griffith.

Despite Huston-Tillotson's dominance early in the second half, Southwest (N.M.) mounted an impressive comeback. Anita Alcantar scored in the 77th minute with an assist from Rylee Thatcher, setting the stage for a tense final 10 minutes. In the 85th minute, Maureen Camacho found the equalizer with a header off a corner kick, once again assisted by Thatcher.

Juliet Morales-Martinez, Huston-Tillotson's goalkeeper, was outstanding, registering 12 saves throughout the match. However, Southwest (N.M.) kept pressing and managed to crack the defense twice. Huston-Tillotson also had their moments, with Burnett-Griffith and Kayla Evans leading the attack with multiple shots on goal.

The match concluded 2-2, leaving both teams with a shared point. Huston-Tillotson now holds a 2-6-1 record (1-4-1 in the Red River Athletic Conference), while Southwest (N.M.) moves to 3-6-2 (1-6-1 in the RRAC). Despite the draw, both teams showed determination and skill, setting the stage for more exciting soccer in the conference season.
