Southwest Struggles in Tough 3-1 Loss to Huston-Tillotson

The Mustangs saw their hopes for a comeback fall short in a hard-fought 3-1 loss against Huston-Tillotson on October 12, 2024, at the Georgetown Soccer Association Fields. Despite a valiant effort in the second half, the Mustangs couldn't overcome their early two-goal deficit.

The match began with Southwest struggling to contain Huston-Tillotson's offense. Huston-Tillotson's Albright Wesley Suh was the standout performer, netting a hat trick. Suh opened the scoring at the 19:56 mark, capitalizing on a mistake by Southwest's goalkeeper, Jeremy Rueda, after a long pass from Jose Camarena. Just minutes later, at 21:21, Suh doubled the lead with a header off a crossing pass from Jafeth Rodriguez, putting Southwest under immediate pressure.

Southwest responded in the second half with increased intensity, creating numerous chances and piling on the pressure. They out shot Huston-Tillotson 14 to 6 in the second period, but the stellar performance of Huston-Tillotson goalkeeper Juan Acosta, who registered eight saves, kept Southwest at bay for most of the match.

The Mustangs' breakthrough finally came at 79:48, with Millaivy Lopez scoring an unassisted goal after recovering a turnover near the penalty area. However, Huston-Tillotson delivered the final blow in the 87th minute, when Suh completed his hat trick off a give-and-go with Caden Cornwell, sealing the 3-1 victory.

Southwest's record now stands at 3-6-2 overall and 1-5-2 in the RRAC. Despite the loss, they showed resilience in the second half, and there are positives to take as they look to bounce back in their next match. However, defensive lapses and missed opportunities will need addressing if they hope to turn their season around.

Coach Edrian Negrete commented post-game, "We didn't take care of the ball in key moments, and we paid for it. The effort was there, but we have to be sharper moving forward."

The Mustangs will return to action next week, when they take on the LSU- Shreveport Pilots in Shreveport, Louisiana.
