Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Jonathan Gamboa

Lady Mustangs Falls to LSU Shreveport in a Hard-Fought Battle

In a competitive match at Shreveport, Louisiana, Southwest fought valiantly but ultimately succumbed to LSU Shreveport, falling 3-1. Despite the loss, Southwest put up a determined performance, but the relentless pressure from the home team was too much to overcome.

Early Lead, but LSU Shreveport Responds

The Lady Mustangs struck first, with Maya Sanchez scoring the opening goal in the 10th minute, assisted by Jadyn Duran. The early lead boosted their confidence, but LSU Shreveport responded swiftly. Diana Godines equalized in the 28th minute, assisted by Gemma White. Right before halftime, LSU Shreveport seized the lead with a goal from Gemma White, taking a 2-1 advantage into the break.

Second Half: Southwest Fights, LSU Shreveport Extends Lead

In the second half, Southwest worked hard to level the score but was unable to break through the solid defense of LSU Shreveport. Diana Godines scored her second goal of the match in the 57th minute, assisted by Dawniella Torres and Gemma White, securing a two-goal cushion for LSU Shreveport.

Despite several attempts from Southwest, including a number of shots from Maya Sanchez, they were unable to convert chances into goals. LSU Shreveport's goalkeeper, Melanie Garcia, made key saves throughout the game to keep Southwest at bay.

Valiant Defense, but Missed Opportunities

Southwest goalkeeper Kristina Simpson was a standout, recording 12 saves throughout the game, with strong support from the defense. However, LSU Shreveport's 20 total shots, 17 of which were on goal, proved too overwhelming.

The loss brings Southwest's record to 3-7-2 overall, with a conference record of 1-7-1. While their effort and teamwork were evident, LSU Shreveport's precision in finishing made the difference in this match.

Southwest will look to regroup and focus on their next challenge as they aim to turn their season around. Their perseverance and resilience are sure to keep them competitive as they face future opponents.

Key Stats:

  • Southwest: 9 shots, 6 on goal, 1 goal (Maya Sanchez)
  • LSU Shreveport: 20 shots, 17 on goal, 3 goals (Diana Godines, Gemma White)
  • Saves: Southwest's Kristina Simpson (12), LSU Shreveport's Melanie Garcia (5)

Southwest has shown they have the fight, and with adjustments, they'll aim to build on the positives from this game moving forward.

The Lady Mustangs will be back in action on Saturday, October 19th when they will travel to Texarkana, Texas to take on Texas A&M Texarkana at 1 PM CT.
