Southwest Falls 3-1 to Texas A&M Texarkana Despite Late Effort

In a hard-fought matchup on October 19, 2024, Southwest was unable to overcome Texas A&M Texarkana, falling 3-1 in Texarkana, Texas. After a scoreless first half, the game opened up in the final 45 minutes, with Southwest fighting back but ultimately falling short.

Texas A&M Texarkana struck first in the 73rd minute, when Kenya Reynolds found the back of the net unassisted. Reynolds continued to be a force for Texarkana, doubling the lead in the 80th minute with an assist from Delani Chappell. Southwest responded quickly, narrowing the deficit in the 85th minute when Rylee Thatcher scored, assisted by Maya Sanchez.

However, Texarkana sealed the game with a goal from Desiree Narvaez in the 88th minute, making it 3-1 and dashing Southwest's hopes of a comeback.

Goalkeeper Kristina Simpson had a busy afternoon, making eight saves against 11 shots on goal. Despite her strong performance, Southwest was outshot 21-8, with Texas A&M Texarkana dominating the offensive chances.

Rylee Thatcher's goal was one of the few bright spots for Southwest, and Maya Sanchez's playmaking set up the opportunity. However, with only five shots on target for Southwest, offensive production was limited compared to Texarkana's sustained pressure.

Southwest now falls to 3-8-2 on the season and will look to regroup as they continue conference play.

The Lady Mustangs will be back in action on October 24th in Hobbs, New Mexico when they will take on Texas College.
