Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Jonathan Gamboa

Lady Mustangs drop both matches in Texarkana this weekend

Game 1 Recap (October 18, 2024)
Southwest faced off against Texas A&M Texarkana in a tough matchup, ultimately falling in straight sets, 10-25, 13-25, 20-25. Southwest struggled with offensive consistency, managing a hitting percentage of .000 with 15 kills and 15 errors over 81 attempts. Despite some solid individual efforts, like Amaiya Williams with 4 kills (.154 hitting percentage) and Aniya Odom contributing 3 kills, the team was unable to match Texarkana's offensive prowess.

Service errors and attack errors plagued Southwest throughout the game, with eight service errors and 12 reception errors. Defensively, Maya Morales led with 10 digs, but the team could not contain Texarkana's aggressive attack, particularly Mia Mata, who had 11 kills and hit .500. Southwest's blocking game was also limited, registering just 3 solo blocks and 6 assisted blocks in comparison to Texarkana's more dominant net presence.

Game 2 Recap (October 19, 2024)
The following day, Southwest again fell to Texas A&M Texarkana in straight sets, 22-25, 13-25, 12-25. Southwest showed more fight in the first set, staying competitive with strong efforts from players like Aniya Odom, who tallied 8 kills on a .357 hitting percentage. However, as the match progressed, errors once again became a significant issue, with Southwest hitting just .034 overall.

While Southwest managed to push Texarkana in the first set, their offensive performance dropped off in the second and third sets, with multiple attack errors, including from key players like Mariah Samario and Danna Gamez. Texarkana capitalized on these errors, with Ja'Kerra Holt leading the way with 9 kills and Kaitlyn Cabral adding 8 kills. Southwest also struggled defensively, with only 30 digs across the match, compared to Texarkana's 36.

In both matches, Southwest's inability to minimize errors and sustain offensive pressure contributed to the losses.

The Lady Mustangs will be back in action on Friday October 25, In Hobbs, New Mexico when they will take on Huston-Tillotson.
