In a tough outing on Tuesday night, the University of the Southwest volleyball team was defeated by Wayland Baptist in three straight sets (14-25, 18-25, 14-25) at the Hutcherson Center in Plainview, Texas. The loss drops the Mustangs to a 1-10 overall record and 1-7 in conference play.

The Mustangs had moments of strong play, especially in the second set where they fought hard to keep the score close, but ultimately they couldn't overcome the offensive firepower of Wayland Baptist, who improves to 8-7 overall and 7-4 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

Sophmore Danna Gamez led the Mustangs with 4 kills, but also struggled with 5 errors, hitting -.045 for the match. Freshman Starlett Hoyuela provided a consistent presence with a solid hitting percentage of .429 and added 10 assists and 5 digs. On defense, Valeria Rodriguez put in a solid effort with 6 digs, and the team recorded a total of 44 digs over the match.

Despite their efforts, the Mustangs struggled to find offensive rhythm, hitting just .039 as a team. Wayland Baptist's balanced attack, led by Carlee Heidebrecht's 10 kills with a hitting percentage of .474, proved too much for the Mustangs.

The Mustangs will look to rebound as they head into their next match against Texas A&M- Texarkana on October 18th in Texarkana, Texas.
