Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Jonathan Gamboa

A Disheartening Finish: Southwest Falls to LSU Shreveport

In a tough afternoon for Southwest, they faced a formidable LSU Shreveport team and suffered a decisive 90-48 loss at home on December 7, 2024. Despite a valiant effort, the team was unable to overcome LSU Shreveport's sharp shooting and strong defensive play.

From the start, Southwest struggled to find their rhythm. LSU Shreveport took control early, outscoring Southwest 24-13 in the first quarter and extending the lead with a dominating 30-9 second quarter. By halftime, the writing was on the wall, but the home team continued to fight.

The shooting percentages told the story of the game. LSU Shreveport displayed a commanding 51.5% from the field and a respectable 39.4% from beyond the arc. Southwest, on the other hand, shot just 30.5% overall and 29.4% from three-point range. Free throws were another missed opportunity for Southwest, as they converted only 33.3% of their attempts compared to LSU Shreveport's 64.3%.

Leading the scoring for Southwest was Macie Werdel, who contributed 11 points and six rebounds. Milinda Arguellez added nine points with some precision three-point shooting, but it wasn't enough to narrow the gap. Hailee Brandon also pitched in seven points, along with three steals, showing grit on the defensive end.

LSU Shreveport's Paula Gonzalez Herre led all scorers with 15 points, including three three-pointers, and Alyssa Christophe contributed 14 points in a highly efficient performance. Their balanced attack and teamwork were evident in their 25 assists, compared to Southwest's 14.

Turnovers also plagued Southwest, with 21 giveaways leading to numerous scoring opportunities for the visitors. LSU Shreveport capitalized on these mistakes, demonstrating their composure and control throughout the game.

Despite the loss, there were moments of promise for Southwest. The team's resilience in the fourth quarter, where they outscored LSU Shreveport 16-18, showed their refusal to back down completely. As the season continues, Southwest will need to regroup and focus on improving their execution and consistency.

While this game may sting, it's a learning experience for Southwest. They'll need to sharpen their focus and come back stronger to face their next opponent. For now, they can take solace in the fact that every setback is a setup for a comeback.

The Lady Mustangs will be back in action on Saturday December 14th against Texas College.
