Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Jonathan Gamboa

Lady Mustangs Fall Short in Thrilling Contest Against LSU Alexandria

In a game filled with intensity and momentum swings, the Southwest basketball team narrowly fell to LSU Alexandria, 66-63, in a hard-fought battle at Hobbs, NM, on December 5, 2024. Despite a valiant effort, Southwest couldn't overcome a fourth-quarter surge by their opponents, marking a bittersweet end to a promising performance.

A Strong Start and Resilient Effort Southwest's defense showed grit throughout the game, holding LSU Alexandria to just 38.2% shooting from the field. They managed to stay neck-and-neck in rebounds, with 32 compared to LSU Alexandria's 35, and matched them in turnovers with 13 apiece.

Milinda Arguellez was a standout for Southwest, leading the team with 17 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Her consistent scoring kept Southwest in the fight, complemented by Celina Celaya's 14 points and solid perimeter shooting.

A Fourth-Quarter Challenge The game's decisive moments unfolded in the fourth quarter, where LSU Alexandria's balanced scoring and composure at the free-throw line proved too much for Southwest. Benedetta Peracchi of LSU Alexandria dominated in the paint, recording a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Dannah Martin-Hartwick chipped in 18 points.

Despite Southwest outshooting their opponent from beyond the arc with nine three-pointers, their struggles at the free-throw line (62.5%) and crucial turnovers in the closing minutes sealed their fate.

Bright Spots and Looking Forward Southwest showcased depth and determination, with contributions from Michaela Ray and Alliah Scallion, who combined for 14 points off the bench. The team demonstrated resilience, battling back from a halftime deficit and winning the fourth quarter 24-13.

While the loss is a setback, the team's performance highlights their potential for growth and development as they move forward in the season.

Final Thoughts Southwest may have come up short, but their effort and determination were evident. With continued improvement in free-throw shooting and late-game execution, this team has the potential to turn close losses into memorable victories. Fans can look forward to seeing Southwest bounce back stronger in their upcoming games.

The Lady Mustangs will be back in action this Saturday at 1 at home against LSU- Shreveport.
