Game Recap: Baseball | | Shaun Reed

Mustangs Split Series

I thought our guys came out strong and finished well, however we were kept off balance and did not play our style of baseball in games two and three. Pitching however, was better this weekend and I thought we competed better on the mound. In the end, our guys didn't lose sight of finishing with the minimum split on the road and found a way to finish strong.

Game 1
The Mustangs took their five-game win streak on the road to Oklahoma Panhandle State and came out on fire in game 1. The Mustangs scored 6 runs in the top of the first inning and didn't look back in game 1. They ended up winning 13-5. Offensively, Kevin Rase and Carlos Jaquez-Munoz were ready to play. Rase went 3-5 while Carlos Jaquez-Munoz went 2-4 with a home run and 3 RBI. AJ Cordova got the start and continued to dominate on the mound. Cordova threw a complete game while striking out 7 and walking only 1 over the course of the game.
Game 2
In the second game of the series, the Mustangs got off to a slow start offensively and defensively as the Aggies scored 4 runs in the first inning on 2 errors and held the Mustangs to 3 hits. Isaiah Alba and Brian Ledezma tried to help the Mustangs stay in it. Alba went 1-2 with a walk while Ledezma went 1-3 with 3 RBI. Kobe Carpio got the start and ended up going 5 innings despite the 4 runs in the first. In those 5 innings, he held the Aggies to 3 hits, 5 strikeouts, 2 walks, and only gave up 2 earned runs. Angel Rios would come in to throw 1 inning. The Mustangs ended up losing a close one by the score of 4-3 in favor of the Aggies.
Game 3
In game 3 the Mustangs looked like they would bounce back but the Aggies weren't buying it. The Aggies would go on to plate 6 runs in the first 2 innings and didn't look back as the Aggies took game 3 8-3. However, there were some positives as Santiago Garica went 1-2 with 2 RBI and Kevin Rase also went 1-2. Taymon Burrola got the start and went 2 innings. Ian Swearingen came in and threw 3.2 innings giving up 1 earned run on 3 hits and 3 strikeouts.

Game 4
After 2 hard losses, the Mustangs look to split the series with the Aggies. Isaac Baeza got the start and the win as he went 4.1 innings giving up 4 hits 2 runs, 2 walks and 5 strikeouts. Angel Rios came in and threw 1.2 innings striking out 3. Caden Davis came to finish the game throwing 1 inning giving up 1 hit, 1 walk and striking out 1. Offensively, Isaiah Alba went 1-3 with a home run and 3 RBI and Brian Ledezma went 3-4 with 1 RBI. The Mustangs ended the series with a win with a score of 8-2.

We must get back to work Monday to prepare for our opening conference series. Each series is important and even more important that we take care of business at home. Defense and focus will be the primary points of emphasis as we host a really good ball club for our opening conference series. I'm excited to get back to work and see what this club can do for the remainder of the season.
