Game Recap: Baseball | | Shaun Reed

Mustangs Win First Conference Series

Overall, we came out with a series win to open up against a very good conference opponent. I thought our pitching was good all weekend and they competed. Our bats were quiet the 1st day, but we made some nice adjustments for game three. We knew we had to come out on with a good mentality on the second day to be able to win the series. We found a way to have good pitching, good enough defense, and enough timely hitting. Having no strikeouts offensively can lead to huge success in a game.

Game 1

The Mustangs were back home looking to start the weekend off hot however they found themselves in a rubber match in game 1 against the Saints. The Mustangs came out scoring in the 1 first inning and managed to score one more in the 6th but that's all they could do. Carson Miller helped by going 2-3 with an RBI. AJ Cordova once again got the start and continued to dominate going 6 innings giving up 3 runs and striking out 5. Jeffery Mathis came in to relieve going 1 inning with 2 strikeouts and giving up a run. The Saints ended up winning this one 4-2.

Game 2

Looking to avenge their game 1 loss the Mustangs were once again in a rubber match and found themselves on the right side of this one winning 3-2 on a walk-off hit by Ayden Ramos with 2 outs. Ramos went 1-4 with an RBI and game-winner while teammate Omar Baldenegro went 1-1 with a sac bunt. Kobe Carpio was on the mound and was excellent going 6 innings giving up 2 runs striking out 2 and walking 2. TJ Ruiz came in to relieve and kept the Saints off the board going 2 innings walking 1 and striking out 3. Caden Davis came in the game in the 9th going 1 inning and striking out 1 which gave the Mustangs a chance to walk it off.

Game 3

With the series split 1-1 the Mustangs looked to take it and did just that winning 15-5. The Mustangs had 18 hits in the contest and scored 13 of the 15 runs in the second inning. Ayden Ramos went 5-5 with 4 RBI and was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. Hayden Woods went 3-5 with 3 RBI. Issac Baeza got the start was lights out. Baeza went 5 innings giving up 2 runs walking 1 and striking out 2. Angel Rios, Taymon Burrola, and Ian Swearingen each made a relief appearance with Swearingen closing it out.

We will enjoy a couple of days off and then get back to work. We know that we have another tough conference opponent coming in next weekend and we must find a way to win the series yet again at home. Nothing gets easier from here on out and we need to stay focused and determined for the remainder of the year. I'll continue to be excited to get back to work with my guy's Monday.
