Hobbs- The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) has announced their 2023-24 ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award Winners and your University of the Southwest baseball team was one of the teams selected to receive the award. To receive the award the team collectively had to receive a team GPA of a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. The 2023-2024 baseball team finished the year with a team GPA of 3.38.  

Out of 800 schools that were recognized USW was 1 of 5 schools in the state of New Mexico and 1 of 2 schools in the Red River Athletic Conference to receive the award. This will be the 5th year in a row that the baseball team has won the award. In the last 9 years the team has received the award 6 times.  

Head coach Steve Appel had this to say about receiving the award, "We have always made their academics a priority in this program and this award just shows that the guys buy in to that belief. This award is a true testament that guys want to excel in the classroom as much as they do on the baseball field."
