HOBBS, N.M. -- The University of the Southwest men's soccer team earned a hard-fought 3-3 draw against Our Lady of the Lake on Thursday afternoon at Bob Moran Soccer Field.
Nicolas Amparan led the charge with two goals, followed by
Alexis Sanchez with a crucial equalizer in the second half. Amparan's came in the 19th minute to level the score at 1-1, whereas Sanchez struck one in the net in the 54th minute off an assist from
Ram Htoo, tying the game at 2-2.
Jose Attong added Southwest's third goal in the 63rd minute, finishing a well-placed pass from
Alexis Sanchez to bring the match even once more after Our Lady of the Lake briefly regained the lead.Â
Southwest outshot the visitors 14-10, including 10 second-half attempts, and earned seven corner kicks to OLLU's four. The Mustangs' aggressive second-half push kept the pressure on, especially after the Saints lost their starting goalie in the 85th minute due to a red card being issued.
Defensively,
Jeremy Rueda made two saves in goal, while the back line absorbed the pressure and limited the Saints to just four second-half shots.
With the result, Southwest moves to 2-5-3 overall and 1-3-2 in RRAC conference play. The team will look to build on this momentum with its next home matchup on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. (MT).
