Hobbs, N.M. -- Despite a pair of goals from junior
Yahir Chacon, the University of the Southwest Mustangs came up just short in a 3-2 loss to undefeated LSU Shreveport on Thursday afternoon at Bob Moran Soccer Field.
Chacon opened the scoring in the 16th minute, finishing a setup from
Hiram Chavez to give the Mustangs an early 1-0 lead. After LSU Shreveport responded with two goals of their own, Chacon struck again in the 60th minute, this time assisted by
Malachi Rodriguez, leveling the match at 2-2.
The Pilots, however, found the game-winner in the 73rd minute, sealing the result despite a valiant effort from the Mustangs.
Goalkeeper
Stephen Chairez was a standout in net, recording seven saves on 10 shots on goal. The Mustangs were outshot 18-3, but made the most of their chances, converting both of their shots on target.
The Mustangs head into another conference play match Saturday against Louisiana Christian with kickoff schedule for 3:30 p.m.
