HOBBS, N.M. -- The University of the Southwest men's soccer team earned a hard-fought 2-1 win over Texas A&M-Texarkana on Friday morning at Bob Moran Soccer Field, after a previous weather delay on Thursday, improving to 3-6-3 overall and 2-4-2 in conference play.
The Mustangs struck early, with
Yahir Chacon converting a penalty kick in the 11th minute to give Southwest a 1-0 lead. Chacon was a constant offensive threat, recording five shots and one on goal. The team extended its lead just after halftime when
Juan Perez buried a second penalty kick in the 48th minute, marking his first goal of the season.
Goalkeeper
Jeremy Rueda anchored the defense with two key saves, helping Southwest maintain its lead despite a late push from the Eagles. Texas A&M-Texarkana's Diego Picano cut the deficit to one with a penalty kick goal in the 70th minute, but the Mustangs held firm through a physical second half that saw multiple yellow cards issued to both sides.
Southwest outshot Texarkana 9-7 and had the edge in shots on goal, 4-3. The Mustangs also matched the Eagles in saves (2) and corner kicks (6), showing a balanced performance on both ends of the field.
With this win, Southwest gains momentum heading into the final home game of the season on Saturday, October 25th, against Jarvis Christian. The senior day match kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. (MT).
