Southwest Holds Off Late Surge to Stay Undefeated

GOODWELL, Okla. — The Southwest women's basketball team remained unbeaten on the season with a 64-60 road victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State on Friday evening at Anchor D Arena for the No Man's Land Classic. The Mustangs improved to 3-0 behind a balanced offensive effort and clutch execution in the final minutes.

Junior forward Karinna Ortiz led all scorers with 20 points, shooting 7-of-15 from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line. She added four rebounds and two steals in a strong two-way performance. Senior guard Seniya Wilson added 18 points and four assists, while Briana Montoya knocked down five three-pointers to finish with 17 points.

Southwest jumped out to a 15-8 lead after the first quarter and extended the margin to 33-19 at halftime. The Mustangs' largest lead came midway through the third quarter at 17 points, but the Aggies mounted a late rally, outscoring Southwest 24-15 in the fourth quarter. Despite the surge, the Mustangs held firm, with Wilson and Ortiz combining for key baskets and free throws in the final minute to seal the win.

Southwest shot 37.5 percent from the field and 29.2 percent from three-point range, while converting 15-of-22 free throws (68.2 percent). The Mustangs forced 14 turnovers and scored 10 points off those takeaways. Despite being out-rebounded 48-30 and outscored 42-20 in the paint, Southwest's perimeter shooting and defensive pressure proved to be the difference.

The Mustangs will look to continue their streak on Saturday for another matchup at the No Man's Land Classic against the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma at 10 a.m. (MT).
