Southwest Battles Hard but Falls to LSU Alexandria

Alexandria, LA – February 1, 2025 – The Southwest men's basketball team fought hard but came up short against the top-ranked LSU Alexandria, losing 79-69 in a competitive conference matchup at The Fort. Despite a strong effort and several lead changes, Southwest was unable to overcome LSU Alexandria's dominant second-half performance.

Strong Start for Southwest

Southwest came out aggressive in the first half, matching LSU Alexandria's intensity. Norman Beckford led the charge, scoring 8 of his game-high 20 points early to help his team keep pace. The visiting team found success inside, scoring 26 points in the paint and taking a brief 5-point lead at the 16:20 mark.

Anthony Scott also made his presence felt, contributing 17 points, 6 assists, and 6 steals, making key defensive stops that helped Southwest stay competitive. By halftime, LSU Alexandria held a slim 38-33 lead, with both teams trading baskets in a physical, high-energy first half.

LSU Alexandria Pulls Away

Southwest continued to battle in the second half, with Beckford and Scott providing the offensive spark. However, LSU Alexandria's Kashie Natt proved to be the difference-maker, recording a double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds. His dominance in the paint, combined with a strong shooting performance from Jakemin Abney (15 points, 7 rebounds), allowed LSU Alexandria to stretch their lead to 15 points midway through the second half.

Despite Southwest's efforts to cut the deficit with clutch free throws and key defensive plays, LSU Alexandria maintained control. The home team's bench outscored Southwest's 37-31, and their rebounding advantage (42-25 total rebounds) played a crucial role in securing the victory.
