Alexandria, LA – February 1, 2025 – The Southwest women's basketball team put up a valiant effort but ultimately fell to LSU Alexandria, 83-67, in a conference matchup at The Fort. Despite a competitive first half, LSU Alexandria pulled away in the later quarters to secure the victory.
First Half Battle
Southwest came out strong, matching LSU Alexandria's offensive efforts early in the game. The first quarter saw LSU Alexandria take a narrow 21-18 lead, with Milinda Arguellez making key plays for Southwest, contributing 7 points and 2 rebounds in the opening period. The second quarter remained close, with both teams trading leads. A three-pointer from Briana Montoya at the 9:49 mark tied the game at 21-21, and moments later, Macie Werdel drained a shot from deep to give Southwest a brief advantage.
However, LSU Alexandria responded with defensive intensity, forcing turnovers and capitalizing on Southwest's mistakes. By halftime, the home team held a slim 34-32 lead.
LSU Alexandria Takes Control
After halftime, LSU Alexandria found their rhythm offensively, outscoring Southwest 24-16 in the third quarter. Jewel Jones was a spark for the hosts, knocking down three three-pointers in the quarter, helping LSU Alexandria extend their lead to double digits.
Southwest struggled with turnovers and LSU Alexandria took advantage, creating fast-break opportunities and dominating the paint. By the start of the fourth quarter, LSU Alexandria had built a comfortable 58-50 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Southwest attempted a comeback but was unable to contain LSU Alexandria's offensive surge. LSU Alexandria's aggressive play inside, led by Benedetta Peracchi, widened the gap.
