HOBBS, N.M. – The University of the Southwest women's basketball team delivered a gutsy performance in front of a lively home crowd, battling back from a double-digit deficit to force overtime before ultimately falling to Texas College, 86–80, in a double-overtime heartbreaker on Saturday afternoon at the Jack & Mabel Maddox Student Life Center.
Southwest trailed by 13 points late in the third quarter but mounted a furious rally in the fourth, outscoring Texas College 19–13 to tie the game at 62–62. Seniya Wilson's driving layup with just over a minute remaining briefly gave the Mustangs the lead, but Texas College answered at the free-throw line to send the contest into overtime. The first extra period saw Southwest surge ahead behind back-to-back three-pointers from Alliah Scallion, giving the Mustangs a 74–71 advantage with under a minute to play. Texas College responded with a clutch three-pointer in the closing seconds to force a second overtime, where the visitors capitalized on free throws and timely baskets to secure the win despite a late three from Karinna Ortiz.
Wilson led all scorers with a dominant 31-point, 10-rebound double-double, adding five steals and converting 16 of 19 attempts at the free-throw line. Ortiz followed with 24 points, including four three-pointers, while contributing four steals and two blocks. Scallion added 16 points and 10 rebounds, hitting three triples and sparking the overtime rally, and Hazel Lord anchored the paint with 15 rebounds, six of them on the offensive glass.
Southwest finished the game shooting 26 percent from the field and 26.3 percent from beyond the arc, but made up ground at the free-throw line, converting 30 of 40 attempts for 75 percent. The Mustangs dominated the offensive glass with 19 rebounds and forced 31 Texas College turnovers, turning them into 24 points. The contest featured nine ties and four lead changes, with Southwest's largest lead coming in the first overtime period.
With the loss, Southwest moves to 5–11 overall and 1–9 in conference play. The Mustangs return to action next week for another conference matchup.
