HOBBS, N.M. — The University of the Southwest baseball team fell to Kansas Wesleyan University on Tuesday's doubleheader at The Jake. The Coyotes' high-powered offense proved difficult to contain as the Mustangs fell 24–11 in game one and 19–3 in game two in the afternoon matchup. Southwest produced some offensive stretches in both contests, with multi‑RBI performances and timely extra‑base hits that kept momentum alive despite KWU's scoring surges.
In Game 1, the Mustangs erupted for 11 runs on eight hits, overcoming a 9–0 deficit to storm back and tie the game 9–9 by the fourth inning. Southwest's rally was fueled by production from Dong Joon Shin, who reached three times, scored three runs, and delivered a two‑run home run in the sixth inning. Jackson Anderson added a two‑run homer as part of a three‑run third inning, while Colby Martinez drove in three runs, including a two‑RBI single during the six‑run fourth frame. Santiago Garcia provided a two‑hit, two‑run, one‑RBI performance, helping spearhead Southwest's largest offensive push of the day. KWU ultimately pulled away with late‑inning power.
In Game 2, Southwest again delivered with early offense, converting a 11–0 deficit to 11–3 in the second inning thanks to a bases‑clearing double from Alex Montiel. Anderson added another multi‑hit performance, while Garcia contributed a multi‑hit game of the afternoon, finishing the doubleheader with four total hits to lead all Mustangs. Noah Nunez provided one of the most reliable outings on the mound for Southwest, working 4.2 innings of relief while striking out three and limiting damage during the middle frames.Â
Across both games, Southwest showcased strong individual efforts. Shin totaled three RBI and four runs scored on the day, Anderson recorded four hits and a pair of RBI, and Martinez tallied four RBI between the two contests. Garcia's consistency, four hits, three runs, and multiple key moments, highlighted the Mustangs' offensive persistence across the doubleheader.Â
Head Coach Steve Appel
"We just are not playing good baseball right now. It is so hard to play this game when your guys just don't have confidence and your arms aren't throwing with intent. Even though things are in the cellar right now, I'm confident we are going to figure it out. It's still early in the year and we just have to understand that better baseball is ahead of us."
Southwest returns to action Friday for another doubleheader against New Mexico Highlands as the Mustangs continue their early‑season home stand. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
