Southwest Closes Season at Home Against LSU Alexandria

HOBBS, N.M. — The University of the Southwest women's basketball team closed out its 2025–26 season Saturday afternoon inside the Maddox Student Life Center, falling 88–68 to LSU Alexandria in the regular‑season finale.

Southwest (7–21, 3–19 RRAC) came out with energy, matching LSUA shot‑for‑shot in a fast‑paced first quarter. The Mustangs trailed by just one after the opening 10 minutes, 24–23, behind strong offensive play from senior Karinna Ortiz and Seniya Wilson. Ortiz poured in 10 first‑quarter points, while Wilson added seven as the Mustangs hit 55.6% from beyond the arc to open the afternoon.

LSUA responded with a high‑powered second quarter, but Southwest continued to battle. Ortiz went into halftime with 18 points, and Hazel Lord provided a spark off the bench with timely perimeter shooting. The Mustangs entered the break trailing 54–38.

Southwest put together one of its best stretches of the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Generals 20–17 coming out of the locker room. Ortiz stayed hot, knocking down another pair of threes, while Wilson and Lord added key baskets to keep the Mustangs within striking distance heading into the final period.

In the fourth, the Mustangs continued to fight, but LSUA's depth and efficiency kept the visitors in control. Southwest saw contributions across the lineup, including defensive stops from Grace Kness and rebounds from Lord, but the Generals closed out the game with late scoring to seal the result.

Ortiz capped her standout afternoon and season with 31 points on 11–19 shooting, including four made threes and a 5–6 performance at the free‑throw line. Wilson finished with 17 points and 9 rebounds, narrowly missing a double‑double. Lord added 10 points, and the Mustangs committed just 10 turnovers.

Southwest shot 37.7% from the field, 27.8% from three, and an efficient 75% at the free‑throw line, while LSUA finished at 50% shooting with 42 total rebounds.

Saturday's contest marked the final game of the season for the Lady Mustangs.
