Box Score LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The University of the Southwest baseball team showed a late-inning fight in a 19–7 road decision at NCAA Division I New Mexico State on Tuesday, generating a four‑run third inning and adding late offense behind a deep bench effort. The Mustangs (6–11) totaled seven runs on seven hits and drew eight walks, turning pressure into production with opportunistic baserunning and quality plate appearances.
After falling behind early, Southwest answered in the third. Bryson Martinez opened the frame with a single before an infield miscue kept the inning alive. Santiago Garcia put the Mustangs on the board with an RBI fielder's choice, and a pair of wild pitches brought home Tim Sedillo and Garcia. Jadon Trujillo finished the rally with a sacrifice fly to center that scored Vyncent Chavez, trimming the deficit to 10–4 and showcasing the Mustangs' ability to manufacture runs.
Southwest continued to create traffic in the seventh with a single from Mark Gonzalez and disciplined at‑bats that loaded the bases. Pinch‑hitter Jacob Brevig forced in a run with a walk and Alex Montiel followed with another bases‑loaded walk to plate Gonzalez. In the ninth, the Mustangs added one more when pinch‑hitter Joshua Loving roped an RBI single to left to score Elijah Arenibas.
Gonzalez and Derrick Martinez paced the offense with two hits apiece, while Chavez reached multiple times, scored twice, and applied pressure on the bases. Garcia tallied an RBI and two runs as part of the third‑inning surge. On the mound, the bullpen received a scoreless outing from Santiago Guerrero during the middle innings, giving the offense room to chip away.
Southwest continues its early‑season slate Friday against conference opponent Our Lady of the Lake and will look to build on the multi‑run frames and depth contributions displayed in Las Cruces.
