Mustang Volleyball is Back at USW

HOBBS, N.M. — The University of the Southwest is proud to announce the return of Mustang Volleyball, marking a highly anticipated revival of the program and a new era of growth for Mustang Athletics. Taking over is Hannah Lax, who has been named the program's new Head Volleyball Coach.

The reinstatement of volleyball reflects USW's commitment to expanding opportunities for student‑athletes, enhancing campus spirit, and strengthening engagement within the Hobbs community.

"Bringing volleyball back to campus is about giving our students more—more opportunities to compete, more reasons to be proud of Mustang Athletics, and more energy in our campus life," said Coach Appel. "We already have the facilities to support a quality program, and with Hannah's enthusiasm, passion, and vision, we're confident this will be done the right way. Volleyball adds more student-athletes to our campus, another exciting sport for our community to rally around, and a better overall experience for our students. This is a win for our athletic department and for the University of the Southwest as a whole."

Lax currently serves as the Athletics Marketing and Communications Coordinator, where she has worked towards elevating USW Athletics through strategic communication, brand development, and athlete‑centered storytelling. As Lax transitions into this coaching role, she will be able to bring an additional perspective to the communication world, reflecting the intensity and commitment of Mustang student-athletes more deeply.

Recruitment for the new USW Volleyball program is already underway. Training and program development will launch this spring as the Mustangs prepare for official competition in the 2026-27 academic year.
