HOBBS, N.M. — The University of the Southwest women's basketball team battled through a challenging shooting night and an early deficit but delivered a resilient second‑half effort in a 73–39 loss to Texas A&M–Texarkana on Thursday evening at the Jack & Mabel Maddox Student Life Center.

Texarkana opened the night with a fast start, using pressure defense and strong interior play to build a 25–7 lead after the first quarter. The Mustangs struggled offensively in the early minutes, shooting 15.4% from the field in the opening period, while Texarkana capitalized on second‑chance points and turnovers. The Eagles led 44–14 at halftime.

Southwest responded after the break with renewed energy, outscoring Texarkana 13–12 in the fourth quarter and improving its shooting to 40% in the final frame. The Mustangs also held the Eagles to their lowest scoring quarter of the night in that period.

Seniya Wilson led the Mustangs with 16 points, attacking the paint throughout the night and finishing a perfect 4‑for‑4 at the free‑throw line. Senior guard Alliah Scallion added six points, highlighted by a momentum‑building three in the third quarter.

Off the bench, Saleen Longoria provided a strong spark late, scoring six points and adding multiple defensive plays that contributed to Southwest's fourth‑quarter push. Jasmin Morgan and Karinna Ortiz added four points each.

Despite the loss, Southwest showcased improvement at the free‑throw line, finishing 81.8% (9–11), and showed significant defensive and offensive growth in the second half. The Mustangs forced multiple turnovers in the final quarter and limited Texarkana to just two fast-break points for the game.

Texarkana finished with advantages in rebounding (48–27) and points in the paint (54–24), which proved decisive. Southwest concluded the night shooting 24.1% from the field and 7.7% from three.

The Lady Mustangs (6–17, 2–15 RRAC) head into another conference matchup on Saturday against LSU Shreveport. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
