HOBBS, N.M. — The University of the Southwest wrapped up its three-game series against LSU Alexandria this weekend, opening the set with an offensive surge before falling in the final two contests as the series concluded Saturday at The Jake.
The series began on Friday with a scheduled doubleheader. Southwest delivered a statement performance in the opener, earning a 16–12 victory behind a balanced offensive attack and timely hitting throughout the lineup.
The Mustangs scored in every inning but one, piling up 16 runs on 16 hits. Dong Joon Shin led the way with a standout performance at the plate, while Mark Gonzales, Alex Montiel, and Carlos Jaquez each drove in multiple runs as Southwest jumped out early and continued to apply pressure. On the mound, Southwest pieced together the win with contributions from multiple arms, holding off a late push from the Generals to secure the opening-game victory.
Game two of the doubleheader proved far more unusual. LSU Alexandria built an early lead before Southwest responded with a massive offensive inning to swing momentum back in its favor. However, as the game stretched late into the evening, play was halted due to a lack of sunlight, forcing a suspension with the game still undecided.
The teams returned to the field Saturday afternoon to resume the second game. Despite Southwest's continued fight, LSU Alexandria was able to regain control and pull away in the final inning, handing the Mustangs a hard-fought loss in the resumed contest.
Following the completion of the suspended game, Southwest and LSU Alexandria played the third and final game of the series later Saturday. The Mustangs again showed resilience at the plate, generating scoring opportunities and continuing to compete through the final out, but LSU Alexandria capitalized on key moments to close out the series with a 15–10 win.
Across the three games, Southwest flashed its offensive potential, producing runs in bunches and showcasing depth throughout the lineup. Shin remained a consistent presence offensively, while Gonzales, Montiel, Vyncent Chavez, and JJ Rosales all contributed key hits over the weekend.
Southwest concludes the series having shown its ability to respond, score runs, and battle through adversity in a weekend that featured long innings, momentum swings, and an unusual schedule adjustment.
Head Coach Steve Appel
"Again, we found a way to come out and win the first game of the series, but just like the last handful of weeks, we just haven't had the arms that want to step up and keep us in games the remainder of the series. We haven't played in the most favorable weather games to be an arm, and you can definitely tell it's wearing on them mentally. We just have to find a way to be mentally tough and forget about our numbers and treat each game like a new one. The next couple of weeks will be important for us. We haven't won on the road and we need to lock in for the entire trip to get on the track we need to be on. We will get back to work again Monday and get ready to focus on simplistic baseball for the next couple of weeks."
The Mustangs now turn their focus ahead to Friday, where they will travel to Jarvis Christian for another three-game conference series.
