Lady Mustangs Softball Battles Through Three-Game Series vs. A&M–Victoria

HOBBS, N.M. — The University of the Southwest softball team continued conference play this weekend home at Baker Field, competing in a three-game series against A&M–Victoria highlighted by strong offensive performances and competitive stretches across all three contests.

Friday Game 1 – A&M–Victoria 16, Southwest 8

Southwest opened the series Friday afternoon with an early offensive surge, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead. Elexes Martinez delivered a two-run double, while Yesenia Rodriguez and Haylee Hernandez each added RBI hits.

The Mustangs collected 12 hits in the game, led by three from Rodriguez and Kilee Raulston. Layla Stouder drove in two runs as Southwest stayed aggressive at the plate throughout the matchup. A&M–Victoria answered with a big second inning and pulled away late to secure the series opener.

Saturday Game 2 – A&M–Victoria 10, Southwest 5

In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, Southwest jumped out in front with a four-run second inning. Danali Garces highlighted the frame with a two-run double, helping the Mustangs take a 4–2 advantage.

Chloe Corral later tripled and scored, while Raulston and Hannah Campos added RBIs to keep Southwest within reach. The Jaguars regained momentum with a four-run fourth inning, and despite continued pressure from the Mustangs, A&M–Victoria held on for the win.

Saturday Game 3 – A&M–Victoria 10, Southwest 5

Southwest closed the series with its strongest offensive output of the weekend, recording 13 hits in the finale. Kamryn Cantu went 3-for-4 and scored twice, while Hannah Campos added three hits and two RBIs. Martinez also contributed an RBI base hit.

The Lady Mustangs plated two runs in the seventh inning in an attempt to rally, but A&M–Victoria's earlier scoring proved decisive.

Southwest showed resilience throughout the series, generating consistent offense and competing inning by inning against a tough conference opponent.

Head Coach Chris Petroski
"We fought well this weekend, but made mistakes that we couldn't offset with our offense. We had a lot of opportunities to take momentum, but didn't produce. I give our pitcher a lot of credit for throwing outs, but we must capitalize on our offensive opportunities."

The Mustangs will look to build on that momentum as conference play continues next weekend at Xavier University of Louisiana.
