Mustangs Strike First in Opener Before Wildcats Rally Late in Weekend

HOBBS, N.M. -- The University of the Southwest opened the series with a strong showing in Friday's first game, defeating Louisiana Christian 6–1 behind a dominant complete-game effort from Miguel Olivas, who held the Wildcats to just two hits while striking out nine with no earned runs allowed. The Mustangs built their lead with a five‑run third inning, fueled by RBI hits from Mark Gonzales and Vyncent Chavez, along with a three‑run homer from JJ Rosales, which pushed the Southwest advantage to 6–0. Louisiana Christian's lone run came in the seventh on an RBI single from Brady Huffman that scored Sterling Sims.

The second game of Friday's doubleheader shifted sharply in Louisiana Christian's favor as the Wildcats erupted for 17 hits in a 13–9 win to even the series. Southwest hung tough early with a four‑run first inning and later tied the game with a two‑run homer from JJ Rosales and an RBI single from Alex Montiel in the eighth, but Louisiana Christian's four‑run final frame secured the victory. Thomas Collins earned the win with two innings of relief.

In Saturday's finale, Louisiana Christian completed the series win in overwhelming fashion, breaking out for 26 runs on 19 hits in a 26–8 victory. The Wildcats scored in every inning from the second through the seventh, including eight runs in the fifth and six more in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach. Southwest totaled nine hits, with Mark Gonzales going 3‑for‑4 with two RBI and Dong Joon Shin adding a pair of run‑scoring hits, including an RBI double in the third.

Louisiana Christian took the series two games to one, bouncing back from a slow start in Game 1 to produce 39 runs across the final two contests and secure the weekend win at The Jake. Southwest will head into a midweek game at New Mexico State on Tuesday.

Head Coach Steve Appel
"We found a way to win the first one and we played well overall, however we just couldn't find it again on the mound in the last two games. We have to find a way to stop playing the same old broken record.  We will continue to keep working on something that will eventually click. We have to also continue to believe in ourselves as a whole and that this doesn't matter right now, it only matters in April. However April is coming up quicker than what we realize."
