HOBBS, N.M. – The University of the Southwest women's soccer team showed resilience throughout Wednesday's home match against Wayland Baptist (TX), playing more than 82 minutes a player down before falling 2-0 at Bob Moran Field.
The contest took a dramatic turn early when Southwest defender Ivory Rico was issued a red card in the eighth minute, forcing the Mustangs to play with 10 players for nearly the entire match. Despite the disadvantage, goalkeeper Elena Moya turned in a standout performance to keep Southwest within striking distance.
Moya delivered one of her strongest performances of the season, recording 15 saves while also stopping two first-half penalty kicks. She denied attempts from Erin Carr in the eighth minute and Cecilia Lopez in the 15th minute, helping the Mustangs withstand heavy pressure from the Pioneers.
Wayland Baptist eventually broke through in the 28th minute when Gabriella Chapa found the back of the net, giving the visitors a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.
Southwest generated several opportunities offensively, including a first-half shot on goal from Kaylynn Miller and additional attempts from Eliza Lopez and Lillianna Monroy in the second half. The Mustangs finished with six total shots despite facing constant pressure from the Pioneers.
Wayland Baptist added an insurance goal early in the second half on a penalty kick by Talia Gisonni in the 48th minute. Moya continued to answer the challenge, making six second-half saves and preventing the visitors from extending their lead further.
The Pioneers outshot Southwest 22-6 and held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks, but the Mustangs' defensive effort and Moya's play in goal kept the match competitive throughout the 90 minutes.
Southwest dropped to 0-4 on the season, while Wayland Baptist improved to 1-3.
