HOBBS, N.M. – University of the Southwest women's soccer scored a pair of second-half goals to topple LSU-Alexandria 2-0 Thursday afternoon in Red River Athletic Conference action.
Â
Sophomore
Naomi Morales and freshman
Noemi Carrillo each scored second-half goals to secure the win over perennial power LSUA.
Â
At 51:55 Morales received a pass from
Desiree Morgas and drilled a shot from 10 yards out to give the Mustangs the advantage.
Â
In the waning moments of the second half, Carrillo scored off a rebound that hit the crossbar and easily chipped the ball into the back of the frame to secure the win.
Â
"Today was another big win for us after dropping a game last Saturday (Huston-Tillotson), which we shouldn't have," USW head coach
Joshua Smith said. "I was really happy with our response. With Ashleigh (Champman) getting injured, Ceci (
Cecilia Contreras) stepped up and played well. Offensively, Desiree (Morgas) created two chances and Noemi and Naomi did a great job of finishing."
Â
LSUA (10-3-2, 6-1-1) outshot USW 5-1 in the opening half, however, the Mustangs made halftime adjustments and outshot the Generals 7-2 in the second half and 8-7 in the game.
Â
Junior goalkeeper
Brittany Garrido was pleased to see her teammates response from the disappointing loss to HTU last weekend.
Â
"I think the loss against Huston-Tillotson really lit a fire under us," added Garrido, a San Diego, California native. "It was such a great team effort and we really showed what we can do on the field."
Â
USW (10-3, 4-3 RRAC) returns to the pitch Saturday at 1 p.m. versus LSU-Shreveport.
