Mustangs Top NCAA Division II Lubbock Christian

LUBBOCK, Texas – The University of the Southwest men's soccer team earned its first win of the season and defeated NCAA Division II Lubbock Christian University 2-1 Wednesday afternoon.

"After a slow start to the season, we needed the win to get confidence for the road ahead," said USW head men's soccer coach Robert Ssejjemba, "I thought we moved the ball really well and created opportunities when it mattered most."

Junior Jack Laurie scored the first goal of the match at the 69:40 mark. Laurie scored unassisted by adding pressure and causing a forced turnover, thus scoring in an empty net.

Senior Robel Yemane scored the second goal of the match at the 77:20 mark with an assist by freshman Trevor Stovall. Stoval made a good run on the left, squared the ball across the goal, and Yemane walked into the goal.

The Mustangs (1-1) totaled eight shots, with LCU totaling 18.

Fernando Sanchez and Michael Boone Jr. each adding one shot for the Mustangs.

USW returns to the pitch for their home opener on September 13th at 3 p.m. against Wayland Baptist University.
