USW Improves to 3-0 on the Season with 5-0 Rout Over Central Baptist

HOBBS, N.M. – University of the Southwest used a strong defense and opportunistic offense en route to a 5-0 over Central Baptist College Thursday afternoon in non-conference action at Bob Moran Soccer Field.

For the third game in a row the Lady Mustangs have not allowed a shot on goal, this time outshooting their opponent 40-0.

"I'm pleased with the win and our play but we have to have more consistent finishing. We lost a couple key players before this game though so I was pleased with the effort the girls showed in responding to the challenge." USW head women's soccer coach Joshua Smith said. "Adriana (Guzman) earned her first start and got a goal and Kristina (Contratto) started for the first time and got two goals. Overall, it was a successful day."

Freshman Desiree Morgas, fresh off RRAC Offensive Player of the Week accolades, scored eight minutes into the first half, adding to her team-best six goals.

At 23:10 in the half, Kristina Contratto received a crossing pass for Karla Parra and buried it home from the right side of the box for her first goal of the season. With less than five minutes to go in half, Adriana Guzman converted a penalty kick, her first goal of the season, and the Lady Mustangs went into the half with a 3-0 lead.

10 minutes into the second stanza, Parra added her second goal of the season. At 70:10 Contratto scored her second goal of the game, with the assist coming from Alexis Gipson.

"My success is nothing without my teammates. Today was only the beginning and we can only go up from here," Contratto said. "I was definitely nervous to make the start but that made me want to work harder. I've wanted to score since our first game and scoring today was amazing!"

Parra finished with a game-high six shots, while Morgas and Barbara de Souza added four shots a piece.

USW (3-0) plays host to McMurry University, an NCAA Division III opponent out of Abilene, Texas, Saturday at 1 p.m.
