HOBBS, NM---The USW Men's Soccer program took on undefeated University of Houston-Victoria on Thursday afternoon in a Red River Athletic Conference match. The Mustangs were unable to pull off the upset, but pushed the undefeated Jaguar squad to their limits in a 1-0 defeat.
"Today's game was a battle. We played a team who hasn't lost all year and we knew we had to come out ready to play. We couldn't come out slow like our previous match. We had a great opportunity 5 minutes into the game, but we weren't able to put it away. We didn't get the result we wanted but I am extremely proud of the boys. They went toe to toe with a great team who is currently receiving votes. As a coach all I can ask for is the players to play as a team and to their full potential; and that's exactly what they did. Now we have to prepare Saturday which is a must win for us to keep our chances alive for postseason play. I told the boys to keep their heads up and be proud of how they played." said Head Coach
Edgar Negrete.
The Mustangs fought hard all 90 minutes, but were unable to come away with an equalizer late. The Jaguars scored early in the 1st half as Brandon Watts put one away in the 20th minute of the match.
USW mustered up 6 shots with 3 being on net. Goalkeeper
Caleb Fimbel allowed 1 goal on 2 shots on net.
The Mustangs are in action this Saturday as they take on OLLU in their final home game of the season. The Mustangs will also be honoring their seniors on Saturday.
The match and Senior Day festivities will be streamed through our Mustang TV.
