HOBBS, NM---The USW Women Soccer program hosted the 1st round of the 2019 RRAC Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Mustangs took on conference opponent University of Houston-Victoria on Saturday and took down the Lady Jaguars 2-0. Both these team met earlier in the season on October 10th that saw 120 minutes of neither team scoring a goal.
Head Coach
D'Angelo Garcia was thrilled with the team victory Saturday and knows that the ladies still have their best soccer to play. " I'm happy. These girls knew that this could have potentially been their last game of the season and they came out hungry. We drew earlier in the season with this team and our girls played to the best of their ability today. It was a great draw from the fans today. We had the Hobbs HS drumline out, the cheer team, and plenty of family members. It was a great atmosphere."
The Lady Mustangs scored both of their goals today off of corner kicks from
Priscilla Garcia. The first goal was scored by
Karla Parra in the 16th minute to put the Mustangs up 1-0. The Lady Mustangs would score early in the 2nd half off a header from senior defender
Kristina Contratto in the 50th minute. "It's something we worked on this past week, both offensively and defensively." said Coach Garcia.
USW completely dominated all 90 minutes as they did not allow a shot on goal all afternoon and only allowed 1 total shots from the Lady Jaguars. The Lady Mustangs had 15 shots on goal with 29 total shots being taken.
Priscilla Garcia took 12 shots with 5 landing on net, but was unable the put one away.
"The girls knew what was on the line today. I think that gave them energy and motive and determination. It could have been the last game for those 4 seniors and our hard work throughout the week paid off." said Head Coach
D'Angelo Garcia.
The Lady Mustangs will take on the LSU-Alexandria Generals on Thursday afternoon at 1:30 PM CST in a rematch of the season finale for both teams. The Lady Generals defeated USW in that matchup 1-0, thus knocking the Mustangs out of first place and out of a chance to win the regular season title. Coach Garcia is excited for the opportunity to get revenge on LSU-A. "LSU-A played great defense last week and we have to figure out how to get around their back line. They have a fast forward up top as well. We beat ourselves last week during the game and after. The girls know what is at stake and it's going to be a battle."
