Women's Basketball Jacob Jarreau

WBB falls to Shreveport & Alexandria

The Lady Mustangs continued their 5-game road trip on Thursday and Saturday as they traveled to Louisiana to take on Louisiana State-Shreveport & Louisiana State-Alexandria. These games were the 3rd and 4th games in a row on the road for the Lady Mustangs. USW lost both contests over the weekend by the score of 97-49 & 86-73. The losses drop the Mustangs record to 6-16 overall and 3-12 in the Red River Conference.

USW 49---LSU-S 97

The Lady Mustangs opened up Thursday's contest by shooting only 42.1% from the field and 0-6 from beyond the arc. LSU-S outscored the Mustangs 23-9 & 20-12 in the first 2 quarters of the game. The Lady Pilots went into the locker room at half up 43-21.

USW was led by freshman Meredith Keasler who scored 19 points on 8-11 shooting from the field. The forward from Maypearl, TX played a game high 28 minutes for the Mustangs and grabbed 2 rebounds and had 2 blocks to go along with her 19 points.

"It was a rough game from the start. We didn't have much energy during the game and we looked tired and sluggish. You can't come out flat against a good team like that and expect to compete." Coach Cory Hitchcock had to say of his teams play on Thursday night.

The Mustang offense began to get rolling in the 2nd half, but were unable to stop the Pilots on the other end of the floor. The Pilots came out with 30 points in the 3rd quarter and scored 24 in the 4th to increase their lead. The Lady Pilots had 6 of their 7 players in double-figures and shot 52.3% from the field and 8-16 from beyond the arc. The Lady Mustangs shot 2-11 from behind the arc for the game and 19/48 from the field.

"Shreveport did a great job of executing their game plan and were hitting on all cylinders." Hitchcock had to say of the execution of the Lady Pilots.

USW 73---LSU-A 86

The Lady Mustangs took their slow start from Thursday night and left it in the rear view mirror as they came out scoring 24 & 20 points in the first 2 quarters of the game. USW took a 44-42 lead into halftime, but lost their offensive rhythm in the 2nd half only scoring 29 points in the final 2 quarters. The Generals outscored the Mustangs in the final 2 quarters to secure the 86-73 leader and their 13th win in conference.

"We really played a great game. The energy was high from the beginning of our pre-game talk. The girls jumped out on them early and did everything I asked of them in the first half. In the second half we struggled knocking down open shots and had three straight possessions where we turned the ball over and they scored to build the lead to 10 in the 4th." Coach Hitchcock said of the difference between the 2 halves.

The Lady Mustangs had 3 players in double figures including Junior forward Mykal Thomas who scored a game high 23 points on 8-16 shooting. Thomas was also 7-8 from the charity stripe and grabbed 7 rebounds and dished out 2 assists and recorded 2 steals. The Mustangs also had strong contributions from Sophomore Tytilayo Green who scored 17 points (7-10 from the field & 3-6 from 3-pt) & forward. Harlei Haceesa who scored 11 points and grabbed 7 boards in 24 minutes of play.

USW shot 41.8% from the floor and 25% from beyond the arc compared to LSU-A's 45.5% from the floor and 36.4% from 3-pt range. The Generals were able to use their bench to their advantage as the LSU-A bench outscored USW's bench by the score of 62-11.

"We were able to make a couple of runs but couldn't get over the hump. We also let them get to the line too much in the 4th quarter. Overall, I'm really excited about how they bounced back from our loss on Thursday night. It was a fun game to coach and I loved seeing them play at a high level." Said Coach Hitchcock after the game on Saturday afternoon.
