HOBBS, NM---Coming off their 15-goal performance on Thursday, the Lady Mustangs started off a bit slow on Saturday afternoon as they hosted Jarvis Christian in another Red River Athletic Conference matchup. USW was only able to muster up 1 goal in the 1st half on Saturday, coming off a
Karla Parra penalty kick in the 28th minute.
Head Coach
D'Angelo Garcia credits Jarvis with pressuring the ladies in the 1st half. "I think the girls underestimated them a bit coming in, especially after observing their last match. They weren't expecting the pressure that they applied to us today. I told them at half that they have to expect the pressure is already there and you need to make faster and smarter decisions."
The Mustangs come out with their tails on fire to start the 2nd half as they scored 3 goals in a 4 minute span. Junior
Priscilla Garcia scored in the 48th and 52nd minute and
Kimberly Nevarez put one past the keeper in the 51st minute. Garcia who scored a goal later on the in the match, scored a whopping 7 goals this week in the two games and knows the team has a ton of confidence after starting off 2-0 in conference. "It gives us confidence as a team and makes us stronger as a unit. We're working hard as a team. My goals come from them and we score goals as a team. It's not just one individual."
Freshman goalkeeper
Andrea Martinez kept another clean sheet for the ladies as she stopped her only shot on net in the 1st half.
The Mustangs host Huston-Tillotson this Saturday with a chance to get to 3-0 in conference play. "They're a solid team. We're going to breakdown their style of play and put it on the training ground. It's going to be our first true test of conference play. They're playing well and scoring goals at a good rate." said Coach Garcia on his preparation for next week. Saturday's match is scheduled for a 1:00 kickoff.
