HOBBS, NM---The Lady Mustangs held on for a 75-73 victory over Jarvis Christian on Saturday afternoon. The win gives USW a victory in 5 of their last 6 games pushing their record to 6-10 on the season and 3-4 in RRAC play. The Lady Mustangs sit currently in 5th place for tournament seeding because Paul Quinn College is not eligible for postseason play.
" We like these close games!" said Head Coach
Devonte Brewer. "They're trying to give me a heart attack. These girls are really buying in and playing well with each other. It's another game with 4 girls in double figures. It starts with ball movement and going with the hot hand. We just have to get better on the defensive boards."
The Lady Mustangs had 4 in double-figures in the game. Senior
Mykal Thomas led the team with 19 points on 7-14 shooting in 33 minutes of play.
Rhianna Bortoli was right behind Thomas with 18 points of her own on 6-18 shooting, including 3-6 from 3-PT range. The Mustangs got to the free throw line 21 times and shot 81% from the line. Despite being outrebounded in the game, the Lady Mustangs got some key defensive stops down the stretch that secured the 2 point victory.
The Lady Mustangs host #23 LSU-Shreveport and (Receiving Votes) LSU-Alexandria this week. "Being at home is going to help us out. Hopefully we get some good crowds and we can feed off the home energy. We just have to take it quarter by quarter, possession by possession. Dig down deep and play our heart out. If we can do that, good things tend to happen." said Coach Brewer on the upcoming games for the Lady Mustangs.
