The University of the Southwest Women's Soccer Team traveled to Texarkana, TX on Thursday, November 11
th for the Red River Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championship. The tournament consisted of the top six teams from the RRAC this year with a berth to the NAIA National Tournament on the line for the winner. The Mustangs came into the tournament as the two seed and earned a first-round bye for their hard work during the regular season. They matched up with the three-seed, Our Lady of the Lake University, in the semi-finals. OLLU came into the contest at (12-5-1) and had the same conference record as the Mustangs at (8-2-1).
The Mustangs had won the regular-season matchup with OLLU that took place back on October 7
th by the score of 2-1 in double overtime. The Mustangs were hoping for a similar result as they faced them in the postseason and a trip to the championship match on the line. That was not in the cards for the Mustangs who were unable to recreate the magic they had in the regular season. They gave up a goal in the 17
th minute and trailed by the score of 1-0 at halftime. OLLU came out attacking in the second half and was able to put three more goals on the board, winning the contest 4-0. The Mustangs outshot the Saints of OLLU 10-8 and were able to put six of those on goal, but were unable to find the back of the net.
Following the contest Head Coach,
D'Angelo Garcia said "We always know it's going to be a battle with OLLU, especially playing them for the third straight time in the tournament. Having beaten them during regular conference play, I felt as if our confidence collectively was there. Clinching the second seed was an achievement itself and I know our team needed that first-round bye due to some minor injuries and just rest itself, mentally. On a stage like this, simple-minor mistakes can cost you, and it did in leading to the end result. During post-season play from year to year, I always mention to the team that whichever team (collectively) plays with the most heart, wins games. We had a couple of early chances to get on the scoreboard however credit to OLLU's defense. They came out today with one job and one job only, and that was to shut down our fast attack offense. You know at this time of year, anything can happen and for us today, unfortunately, it didn't go our way."
The Mustangs will lose a lot off the current roster heading into next year that they will have to replace. The program has been very successful under Coach Garcia, making the conference tournament in all four years that he has been the head coach. He will have his hands full trying to replace some of the talented players the Mustangs will lose to graduation.
Regarding his seniors, he had this to say "For a lot of our players, it was their last game. It was a bit emotional to have such a strong senior group leave the way we ended. These seniors were freshmen when I first started coaching them and the achievements they have accomplished are far to none. They were a part of something very special by breaking numerous records in the record books and I can't thank them enough for what they have done for our program. As I mentioned to them after the game, this loss shouldn't define who they are as individuals. You're going to win games and you're going to lose games however, what's most important for these awesome seniors is that life itself is about to really start and I cannot wait to see what their future holds."
The Mustangs wrapped up the year with 17 games played which was tied for 2
nd in program history. They totaled 10 wins on the year which was tied for 4
th in program history and a winning percentage of .647 which was good for 4
th as well. They set the program record for most conference wins in a season with eight. They scored 58 goals on the year which was good for the third-best in program history and had the second-most assists in program history with 37. Senior
Priscilla Garcia added to her already program best in points and now sits at 112. She sits in 1
st in program history with 46 career goals and assists with 20. She now sits in 1
st in career game-winning goals with 10, after a ridiculous 6 just this year. She tied herself in second for goals in a season with 16 this year. She was a two-time RRAC Offensive Player of the Year in her time with the Mustangs.
The Mustangs will look to reload and be a serious contender in the RRAC again next season.
