MBB: Mustangs Drop Exhibition to Eastern New Mexico

The University of the Southwest Men's Basketball team took on Eastern New Mexico University on Saturday afternoon in what was an exhibition for the Mustangs against the NCAA D2 Greyhounds. The contest was a road game for the Mustangs and played at "The Rock" at Clovis High School. The Mustangs would drop the contest 77-70 in a hard-fought battle. 
 
The first half was a back-and-forth affair that saw six ties and five lead changes. The Mustangs got out to a 14-6 lead at the 14:38 mark of the contest and took a 38-37 lead to the halftime break. The Greyhounds came out in the second half and were able to take the lead but the Mustangs kept it close throughout, cutting the lead to six several times late in the contest (70-64, 72-66, 74-68). They came up a few plays short dropping the contest 77-70 in what was a good showing. 
 
The Mustangs were led offensively in the contest by senior Jeremiah Toney who scored 19 points on 8 of 18 shooting and chipped in with 5 rebounds and two steals. Senior Alvin Thompson added 16 points of his own on an efficient 6 of 12 from the floor. Senior Brandon Meadows, a transfer from ENMU, racked up a double-double against his old team with 15 points and 10 rebounds. The Mustangs shot it a 43.3% clip in the contest and collected 34 rebounds whereas ENMU shot it at a 44.6% clip and collected 43 rebounds. The Greyhounds were able to find an advantage in the paint scoring 48 points in the paint compared to the Mustangs 32.
 
The Mustangs sit at (3-5) on the year and have two more non-conference games before they open up conference play. The two remaining non-conference games will be the first two home games of the year for the Mustangs in what has been a challenging and road-dominated schedule to open the season. They will take on Wayland Baptist University at home in the Jack & Mabel Maddox Student Life Center on the campus of USW on Saturday, December 11th at 2:00 PM.
