This past week the University of the Southwest women's soccer team opened up conference play with two victories over Texas College and Jarvis Christian College. These two games were the first conference games for the Lady Mustangs as they went 2-2-1 in non-conference games before this week.
In the first game on September 23rd, the Lady Mustangs traveled to Texas College and defeated the Steers 18-0. This is the most points put up by the Lady Mustangs in program history, as three different players each recorded a hat trick during the game. The goal scorers for the Lady Mustangs were Priscilla Garcia (3), Maya Sanchez (3), Josie Crump (3), Corrina Ortiz (2), and then six other players had a goal apiece along with one own goal by Texas College. After the contest Head Coach, D'Angelo Garcia said "It's always nice to have new faces earning their way into the stat book. Despite the score and outcome, we were able to have everybody play and work on some areas that needed improvement. It was one of those games where we were able to build confidence and momentum as our conference schedule begins to gain strength from here on out. Some people might think that running the score that high is a bit out of hand, however when you have players who rarely see the field, why stop their goal-scoring chances? I was very excited to see some of those players getting the chances and opportunities to finally be able to score collegiate goals and for some, it was even their first collegiate game. Everybody remembers their first collegiate goal or assist, and I didn't want to take that away from them. We also had the opportunity to break program records with three girls recording hat tricks and assists. Overall, I was very happy to see new and familiar faces contributing."
In a quick turnaround just two days later the Women's Soccer team came back home to Bob Moran Field and took on the Bulldogs of Jarvis Christian College. They continued their conference dominance as they beat the Lady Bulldogs 8-1 in convincing fashion. The Lady Mustangs were led by Senior Priscilla Garcia as she paced the Mustang attack with 3 goals and 1 assist in just 48 minutes of play. Backing her up was fellow Senior Corrina Ortiz who had 2 goals in the first half as well. After the game here is what Coach D'Angelo Garcia had to say about his team, "Today's game was much better in terms of competing with our opponent. We started the game back on our heels until we found our momentum after we scored the second goal. Once the second half started, we were able to finally connect much better and when we started making substitutions the level never really dropped. Sometimes these games bring out our frustration since it's difficult to break through on a team when they play defensively, however, we were able to work around some of their mistakes. It's always a good feeling to play everybody especially when we are at home. I was hoping for a shutout; however, all credit and respect goes out to Jarvis for never quitting and playing up until the final whistle. After the game, I reminded the team that the game is never over despite what the current score is. Scoring twenty-five goals in two games is something you rarely see. Collectively, we need to remain humble and stay focused, because we have yet to play some of the stronger teams in our conference."
Along with the two victories this past week, Senior Priscilla Garcia got recognized as the RRAC women's soccer offensive player of the week for September 20-26. The stat line for #7 included 6 goals and 3 assists in just 2 games for the Lady Mustangs. This honor is Garcia's 2nd offensive player of the week award this season. Goalkeeper Kristina Simpson also did a great job while in goal this week. She recorded a shutout and another half of scoreless goalkeeping in the two contests.
The Lady Mustangs will play Paul Quinn College on October 2nd, at home, as they look to continue their four-game win streak and 2-0 start to conference play.
