WSOC: Lady Mustangs Win Big Over Paul Quinn

Dallas, TX - Five in a row is what the University of the Southwest Women's Soccer team was looking for as they faced off against Paul Quinn College this weekend. The Lady Mustangs were sporting a 4-2 record while the Tigers of Paul Quinn were 6-1-1 heading into the matchup.

It did not take long for USW to get on the board in this one as Sophomore Maya Sanchez found Graduate Student Jennifer Schroeder in the 7th minute for the game's first score. Schroeder was not entirely done, as she found her second of the match just five minutes later in the 12th minute, putting USW up 2-0 early.

In the 24th minute, Junior Sierra Saenz set up last week's RRAC Offensive Player of the Week, Maya Sanchez, for her first goal of the match. The Lady Mustangs were not done as Freshman Elizabeth Rico found the back of the net in the 41st minute to put USW up 4-0 going into the half.

The Lady Mustangs came out firing on all cylinders once again as Maya Sanchez scored her second goal of the day off of an assist from Senior Mayeli Torres in the 50th minute. Sanchez would add another one for her third of the match in the 56th minute, putting the Lady Mustangs way ahead of Paul Quinn College, 6-0.

The Tigers were able to get one back in the 84th minute to make 6-1, but the game would be out of reach by this point. Just before the whistle, Mayeli Torres would add one more for the Lady Mustangs to solidify a 7-1 victory over a tough Paul Quinn team.

"I was very happy by how we played against Paul Quinn today," said Coach Edgar Negrete following the big win. "Today was a game I didn't have to do much coaching in. We moved the ball well and weren't just scoring ordinary goals. We were scoring world-class goals from building up play, even scoring on a free kick from 35 yards out and some shots that got placed in the top corner. It was fun to see. We had some grad students, seniors, juniors, and even freshman scores. The coaching staff couldn't ask for a better performance."

Coach Negrete and his squad look to continue their form as they continue their RRAC Conference play when OLLU rolls into town next Thursday.

"We have a big week coming in front of us that will test us. We hope to have a lot of support from the faculty, staff, student body, and family support for our home game against OLLU. It will be a rivalry game, and it's always an intense one. It's a game we must win if we want to make a statement. We hope to see everyone out for some good soccer on Thursday, and hopefully, we can get the result. We will enjoy today and get after it again on Monday for our biggest challenge thus far."

USW Women's Soccer looks to make it six in a row as they take on Our Lady of the Lady University Thursday, October 6th, at home. Continue to follow USW Athletics and USW Women's Soccer on all social media for scores and updates throughout the season.
