The University of the Southwest Women's Basketball Team played host to two RRAC conference foes this past week. The Lady Mustangs were looking to bounce back after dropping two games on the road the previous weekend. It was a difficult set of games for the Lady Mustangs as they dropped both matchups, Thursday against Texas College and Saturday versus Jarvis Christian College.
Texas College
Texas College (5-8, 2-4 RRAC) came into Thursday's matchup riding a five-game losing streak, four of which had been in conference games.
The Lady Mustangs (2-9, 0-5 RRAC) began with a hot start in the first quarter, as the defense was able to hold Texas College to only six points. Southwest would continue to play strong as they maintained their lead throughout the second quarter and headed into halftime with a 30-20 lead.
The Steers would bounce back after the half and put up an impressive 23-4 third quarter, making it 43-34 in favor of Texas College. Their enormous third quarter would prove to be the turning point as the Steers stayed on top through the final buzzer, ending their losing streak with a 55-47 win.
For the Lady Mustangs, Junior
Awreona Ransom led the way with 15 points and four rebounds. Junior
Brianna Ford had a near double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Senior
Sierra Smith had three points and dominated the boards with 17 rebounds.
Jarvis Christian
The Bulldogs (6-4, 3-3 RRAC) were sitting near the middle of the RRAC standings and came into town following their impressive showing against Texas College earlier in the week.
Southwest fell behind early against Jarvis, but both teams played a tight first quarter, with JCC leading 14-11 at the end of the period. The Bulldogs put together a good run in the second quarter to create some separation between the two and headed into the half up 37-26.
A tight Jarvis defense continued to play well against Southwest, as the Lady Mustangs were never able to put a run together to make the game tighter. Jarvis Christian would go on to lead after the third 51-39 and then finish it off 67-57 to put them at .500 in the RRAC.
Junior
Awreona Ransom led in points with 14 and added four assists. Junior
Tamaria White and Freshman
Karinna Ortiz chipped in with 12 points apiece. Senior
Sierra Smith had another dominant game on the boards with 24 rebounds and added seven points of her own.
