In a closely contested match, Southwest men's soccer team couldn't overcome an early deficit, falling 4-2 to Houston-Victoria in Victoria, TX. The loss leaves Southwest with a 3-5-2 overall record and 1-4-2 in conference play, while Houston-Victoria improves to 5-2-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the conference.
Houston-Victoria opened the scoring in the 19th minute with an unassisted goal from Mathias Jorstad. The home team doubled their lead just before halftime, with Archie Mills finding the back of the net after a setup by Felipe Rangel.
Southwest, however, showed resilience and fought back in the second half. Richard Wohl put Southwest on the board in the 49th minute, converting a pass from Yahir Chacon to cut the deficit to 2-1. But just as Southwest began to build momentum, Houston-Victoria responded quickly. Yahir Pena scored in the 59th minute, assisted by Jorstad, restoring the two-goal cushion.
Yahir Chacon gave Southwest a lifeline in the 64th minute, scoring with the help of Nicolas Amparan, narrowing the gap once again to 3-2. Despite their efforts to level the score, Southwest couldn't capitalize on their chances. A missed penalty kick and multiple saves from Houston-Victoria's goalkeeper, Tyler Kaeppeli, halted their comeback efforts.
The final blow came in the 80th minute when Adam Thompson scored Houston-Victoria's fourth goal, assisted by Osiel Robledo, putting the game out of reach for Southwest.
Southwest goalkeeper Jeremy Rueda made seven crucial saves but couldn't prevent Houston-Victoria from finding the net. Despite having more second-half shots (8), Southwest struggled to break down a well-organized Houston-Victoria defense.
