HOBBS, N.M. -- The University of the Southwest women's soccer team showcased early dominance on Saturday afternoon, but a strong second-half surge from Texas A&M University-San Antonio led to the Mustangs falling 5-2 at Bob Moran Soccer Field.
Southwest (1-12-1, 1-6-1) came out firing, with
Roxana Bustamante opening the scoring in the 12th minute on an unassisted strike. Just eight minutes later,
Gizel Lopez capitalized on a pinpoint assist from
Joanna Estrada, putting the Mustangs ahead 2-1.
Despite the early lead, the Jaguars responded with four unanswered goals. Southwest outshot TAMUSAÂ 14-12 and led in corner kicks 8-4, demonstrating offensive aggression throughout the match.
Jadyn Duran led the team with six shots, while Roxzlynn Ramsey,
Aleah Ortiz and
Ashly Maradiaga each added pressure in the attacking third. Goalkeeper
Elena Moya recorded four saves in a full 90-minute effort.
The Lady Mustangs return to action next week to take on Texas A&M University-Texarkana at home with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
