HOBBS, N.M. -- The Southwest women's basketball team continued its dominant start to the season, improving to 2-0 with a commanding 95-75 victory over Navajo Technical University on Thursday evening at home.
Southwest came out firing, jumping to a 23-17 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. The Mustangs used a balanced offensive attack and relentless defensive pressure to keep the Skyhawks at bay, outscoring them in three of four quarters and sealing the game with a 30-point fourth quarter.
Briana Montoya led all scorers with 28 points on an efficient 11-of-15 shooting, including 6-of-10 from beyond the arc. She was one of five Mustangs in double figures, joined by
Seniya Wilson (21 points, seven assists, five steals),
Karinna Ortiz ( 14 points),
Michaela Ray (12 points) and
Hazel Lord (10 points).
Southwest shot 46.3% from the field and a perfect 12-of-12 from the free throw line. The Mustangs also forced 17 turnovers, converting them into 23 points with 16 steals on the night.
Despite being out-rebounded 35-28, Southwest dominated the paint with 56 points inside and added 10 fast-break points to keep the tempo in their favor.
Navajo Tech (0-2) shot 41.3% from the field, but struggled from the deep, hitting just nine-of-45 (20%) from three-point range.
Southwest's largest lead of the night came in the fourth quarter, stretching to 24 points as the team closed the game with a flurry of scoring and defensive stops.
The Mustangs will look to carry their momentum into their next matchup as they continue non-conference play.
